Devadaru or Devatharu is a big tree growing only in Himalays naturally and also cultivated in recent years in other places of India. Its stems and barks are having a good odour even for many days after it is cut or powdered. These Devadar stems are cut into smaller pieces and available online as raw material. It is being used as a herbal ingredient and also as a pooja samagiri.
It is called in English as Himalayan Cedar, Deodar in Hindi, Devadaru in Telugu, Devatharam in Malayalam, Devadari in Kannada. Irutharu, Tharam, Pathra Tharikam, Sura Maram are the other names of Devatharu in Tamil. Its Botanical Name is Cetrus Deodara.
Devadaru wood cut into small chips are mostly used as a Pooja Samagiri while doing Homam. It can also be used to remove bad smell in our house. As it is having high oil content in its stems, those chips are easily flammable among the Pooja Samagiri.
